The Muted Playground
沉默的遊樂場
2024
This photographic series captures the profound and multifaceted impact of the pandemic on public spaces like playgrounds. Playgrounds were supposed to be vibrant, imaginative, and designed to promote joy and exploration. In each photograph, there is a red warning cross tape creating a sharp contrast and visually showing the efforts to curb the spread of the virus. The juxtaposition of colourful, inviting elements and eye-catching barriers creates a striking visual metaphor that evokes a feeling of disruption, isolation and collective loss.
Through my lens, I aim to highlight the bittersweet reality and capture the loss and solemnity surrounding the restricted inaccessible playground spaces. The muted, sun-bleached colours add a layer of social commentary. It evokes the idea of the pandemic silencing these once-vibrant public sanctuaries. The loss of colours gives the images a weathered, aged feel, suggesting the passage of time and the fade of vibrant energy, giving a melancholic and nostalgic feeling. Embodying the pain of lost freedom and opportunity while evoking a sense of remembrance and lasting hope, while hinting at the enduring human capacity for resilience and adaptation.
